2024: "The Royal Berkshire Hospital (RBH) is an NHS hospital in the town of Reading in the English county of Berkshire. It provides acute hospital services to the residents of the western and central portions of Berkshire, and is managed by the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.

The hospital provides approximately 813 inpatient beds (627 acute, 66 paediatric and 120 maternity), together with 204 day-beds and spaces. In doing so, it employs over 5,000 staff and has an annual budget of £228 million.[1]

The buildings that house the hospital are of various ages, from the original building of 1839 to the latest ward block completed in 2015. Despite the various ages and styles of building, almost all of the hospital's departments are accessible from a single indoor pedestrian route that runs the length of the site. The original entrance on London Road still exists, but the main entrance is now situated in Craven Road, roughly at the midpoint of this route.[14]

Amongst the buildings within the hospital complex is the old laundry, built in 1881. This now houses the museum of the Berkshire Medical Heritage Centre, which contains 3,000 artefacts relating to medicine, surgery, nursing, midwifery, pharmacy and dentistry. Some of the exhibits date back to the 17th century.[15]

The original building of 1839, together with the wings added in the 1860s, are now listed grade II* by English Heritage. They are built of Bath Stone with slate roofs, and the main building comprises 2 storeys and a basement. The frontage has 11 bays, with the central 7 bays forming a projecting pedimented hexastyle portico with Ionic columns.[2] "

2024: "Parking Charges: There are barriers to the multi storey car park, so you will need to take a ticket to enter it. Before you return to your vehicle (at the end of your stay) please pay the amount due at a pay station (these are located on levels 0 and 2). The following are eligible to be issued with a concessionary (reduced cost) parking permit on a ‘one per patient’ basis:

outpatient or day-case patients who are not entitled to a free parking permit whose appointment or treatment is expected to exceed four hours

regular visitors to long-stay or very ill patients ‑ to be authorised at the discretion of the ward sister.

The issued permit will allow free or concessionary parking of one motor vehicle in any Trust public on-site pay & display space for the period quoted on the permit. Maximum permit duration is as follows:

concessionary permits one week. 

free permits one month.

When their permit expires, eligible applicants can reapply for another permit. The permit will specify the car registration number and is therefore not transferable to other vehicles."

There is a 300 'hospital' park and ride service between Royal Berkshire Hospital and the Mereoak and Thames Valley Park park and ride sites.

The 300 bus service runs Monday to Friday from 6am until 7pm buses run up to every 20 minutes, journeys cost £2 per single and parking costs £1 at Mereoak and £1 per hour at Thames Valley Park, capped at £4 per day.

HRR is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers and is on-air 24 hours a day, including live programmes every weekday evening between 7 – 10pm, 10am – 10pm on Saturdays and 12.30pm – 10pm on Sundays.  At other times you can hear an automated service of music and useful information.

HRR’s record requests programmes are on-air every evening between 8.00 and 10.00pm as well as on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Volunteers aim to visit each ward twice a week to collect requests but you are welcome to call in on the free 24-hour request line by dialling *800 from the Hospedia phone at your bedside.
