Accessibility:
Most of the lower parts of the garden can be accessed with wheelchairs and a wheelchair is available from reception. A map of accessible routes is available from reception. Meadow paths can become difficult to negotiate after heavy rainfall and some of the paths in the upper reaches of the garden have steps and are steep in places. The free parking is 50 yards away but there is a drop-off point. A disability toilet is situated next to tea-room. Braille and large print guides are available.
Brief Description:
Colby Woodland Garden has an industrial heritage and played an active part in Pembrokeshire’s coal industry during the late 1700s. The garden was planted nearly a century later, but reminders of its industrial past are scattered throughout the eight-acre site.
The coal from the mines at Colby, which was pulled out off the mine by children because of the shallow seams, was transported to Saundersfoot.
Colby Lodge, built between 1802 and 1805, is not open to the public.
The garden was initially planted in the 1870s by Samuel Kay when further alterations during the 1920s, with ponds and other features, were built.
The whole site includes a walled garden, an old tramway and other artifacts and art works.
